About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire five (5) Civil Engineer Trainees. As a Civil Engineer Trainee, you have the possibility of promoting to a Civil Engineer I within 7-9 months. A possibility of promoting to a Civil Engineer II within 12-24 months. A possibility of promoting to a Civil Engineer III within 18-24 months. Civil Engineer Trainees with the Illinois Department of Transportation are trained in a variety of specializations during the program. Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college (including those expecting to graduate in the next 12 months) OR a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a Professional Engineer License in the State of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the State of Illinois.
  • Must have a minimum of 2.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • If cumulative GPA is between 2.0 and 2.5 (out of 4.0), applicants must also possess a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Extensive travel with some overnight stays.
  • Shift schedule changes may be required to work overnight shifts.
  • Overtime.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, and deal with animals, insects, rodents and snakes, perform physically demanding outdoor work in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy), active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the routine practices of civil engineering.
  • Coursework and training in civil engineering.
  • Basic skill in the use of engineering field and office instruments.
  • Ability to make relatively difficult technical computations and estimates.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides accurate and timely layouts, measurements, computation and documentation of contract items.
  • Provides accurate measurement, computation, and documentation of engineering items.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of any problems encountered or deviations made.
  • Ensures that items inspected/designed are in accordance with the specifications.
  • Provides accurate and timely layouts/plans.
  • Rotates to other bureaus within the district as part of the rotational training program.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
