Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • A background investigation is required.
  • This is a bargaining unit position (AFGE Local 421).
  • Generally, male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Must submit transcripts.
  • Relocation expenses will not be paid.
  • If hired, you may be required to divest certain energy-related securities.
  • Travel is required to conduct site inspections, attend meetings, conferences, or training.
  • Site inspections may involve arduous physical activity such as hiking in mountainous terrain and climbing steeply inclined faces of dams.
  • Must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level.
  • Specialized experience is defined as: experience independently applying expert level structural engineering to the analysis, investigation, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of hydropower facilities or dams and similar structures (such as bridges and buildings).

Responsibilities

  • Conducting dam inspections, performs and reviews analyses, reviews plans and specifications for design and construction, and provides technical comments for licensed hydroelectric projects with difficult, complex, and/or controversial features with a focus on the structural elements, such as concrete dams, gates, intakes, powerhouses, etc.
  • Preparing engineering reports and letters, including detailed comments and recommendations, to establish and document dam safety of hydroelectric projects.
  • Evaluating the adequacy of design, constructability, and compliance with the Commission's guidelines and current engineering criteria and practices for a wide range of structures including various types of concrete dams and appurtenant structures such as gates, intakes, and powerhouses.
