About The Position

The candidate will report directly to the Supervisor of the unit. They will conduct field visits to identify deficient structural conditions, perform structural analysis, prepare design plans and determine scope of work. Create detailed sketches, and designs repair protocols. Maintain an up-to-date record of outstanding repair requests, ensures timely repairs according to the urgency of the flag condition and routinely communicate with relevant DOT units and contractors to follow up on the status of repair requests and complete repairs as per NYS DOT Bridge Inspection Manual guidelines and the NYSDOT OSS Inventory and Inspection manual. Supervise and manage the coordination of repair request work with external units, agency divisions, and governmental entities. Confirm the repairs comply with required codes and standards, such as the NYS Construction Specifications, Steel Construction Manual, and others, as necessary. Review of preliminary (capital) design drawings to ensure future maintainability. Make independent or group field visits in a city vehicle to NYSDOT and NYCDOT-owned bridges, sign structures, elevated structures, and over water. Preparation of responses to correspondence, making court appearances, provision of affidavits, and testimony on behalf of the City. Sign and seal engineering and other official documents. Planning, guidance, and review of the work of subordinate engineers and other staff. May be required to work evenings, nights, and weekends. Performs other related duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License
  • Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment
  • To be appointed to a Civil Engineering position in Bridges, candidate must possess one year of civil engineering experience in bridge design, bridge construction, bridge maintenance, or bridge inspections

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required
  • Strong background in AutoCAD, Acrobat and MS office suite
  • Ability to drive city owned vehicle for certain assignments
  • Possess a driver's license valid in the State of New York with no restrictions
  • Must be organized and be able to effectively and professionally communicate
  • Must be able to compose formal letters and emails
