About The Position

Are you interested in working on progressive projects that support infrastructure in Seattle communities? If so, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is looking for an Assistant Civil Engineer to join the Materials Laboratory of SPU's Project Delivery and Engineering Branch. This role will support and manage materials related issues on Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and various less projects across all city departments. The Assistant Civil Engineer position will provide and coordinate approval and acceptance of materials with other staff and will work on moderately complex CIP in a diverse team environment. The roles and responsibilities of this position vary based on the project and business needs. Work in this position will be a mixture of office setting, construction site, and construction materials laboratory dependent on the demands of CIP. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Nice To Haves

  • EIT certification in the State of Washington
  • Experience emphasis on construction engineer and construction material engineer.
  • Conduct special inspections and coordinate other testing and inspection services during construction phase.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and assist in providing quality assurance in field and laboratory sampling, testing and inspection of construction materials in accordance with established standards including but not limited to AASHTO, ASTM and ACI to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications and funding requirements of external sources.
  • Perform engineering calculations, prepare test records and reports.
  • Research, reivew, and provide advice regarding construction materials during constructon phase and contractor submittals.
  • Maintain necessary certifications and professional competencies to meet the requirements of AASHTO R18 and the SPU Materials Lab Quality System Manual.
  • Coordinate as necessary with inspectors on testing schedule, frequency and logistics.
  • Prepare and maintain Record of Materials for capital improvement projects.
  • Assist with the maintainence and calibration of field and laboratory test equipment and recommend changes to testing procedures when appropriate.
  • Participate in training of student interns new hires.
