About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City. Serves as Engineer-in-Charge in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspection and Operations, Division of Bridges. The Division is responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability of New York City's bridge infrastructure. Within the Division, Bridge Management plays a central role connecting inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory data, deterioration modeling, and capital planning to identify structures requiring rehabilitation, replacement, posting, restrictions, or inclusion in future capital programs.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License.
  • Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required in “1" above.
  • Individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex analysis of bridge load rating calculations in accordance with load rating policies, procedures and Federal and State load rating directives.
  • Sign and seal the Load Ratings documents.
  • Perform the required structural analysis for the City-Owned Bridges to ensure their safety against the heavy weight Trucks and Cranes.
  • Perform field inspection of bridges to assess the condition and to obtain information for project scoping as part of Request for Proposals (RFP) for the procurement of design Consultants.
  • Review budgetary plan for bridges rehabilitation projects.
  • Supervise subordinates in technical and administrative matters as required.
  • Be flexible to work on fully or any of the tasks described above depending upon the workload.
