About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing over 800 bridges, tunnels, and 600 retaining walls, ensuring public safety and mobility. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, maintenance, engineering reviews, and quality assurance tasks. This role is within the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations. The Bridge Management Section focuses on connecting bridge inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory, maintenance needs, and engineering evaluations with long-term capital planning. The selected candidate will support the Scoping Unit in identifying bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and component rehab needs, and assist in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and related budget reports. The position provides exposure to bridge asset management, project scoping, capital program development, budget coordination, and coordination with other bridge units and capital delivery groups.

Requirements

  • Must be serving permanently in the title of Assistant Civil Engineer, or must have filed for the upcoming exam # 7006, and provide proof of filing.
  • A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Assistant Civil Engineer in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations, Division of Bridges.
  • Support the Scoping Unit in identifying bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and component rehab needs.
  • Assist in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and related budget reports.
  • Assist senior engineering staff in reviewing bridge inspection reports, inventory data, condition ratings, maintenance records, and other available information to help determine project needs and priorities.
