About The Position

The Civil Craftsman is responsible for performing skilled industrial civil construction activities, including reinforcing steel installation, formwork construction, concrete placement and finishing, and related civil work in support of refinery, petrochemical, chemical, manufacturing, power generation, and other heavy industrial projects. The position works from construction drawings, specifications, elevations, and project plans to construct foundations, equipment pads, pedestals, pipe supports, containment structures, structural concrete, and related industrial infrastructure. The Civil Craftsman is responsible for performing assigned work safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications, quality requirements, Company procedures, and customer site requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant civil construction experience preferred, with industrial construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience performing concrete formwork, reinforcing steel installation, concrete placement, and/or concrete finishing activities.
  • Experience working in refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial construction environments preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, structural details, dimensions, elevations, specifications, and civil layout information applicable to assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of industrial concrete construction methods, materials, tolerances, and quality requirements.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and other equipment associated with civil construction activities.
  • Ability to successfully complete required Company, customer, and site-specific safety training, orientations, and access requirements.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) preferred or ability to obtain one when required by project or customer assignment.
  • NCCER craft certification, OSHA training, or other applicable industry certifications preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial civil and concrete construction methods, materials, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of reinforcing steel installation, spacing, lap requirements, supports, placement, and securing methods in accordance with applicable drawings and specifications.
  • Skilled in constructing, setting, aligning, bracing, modifying, and dismantling concrete formwork.
  • Knowledge of concrete placement, consolidation, screeding, finishing, curing, protection, and repair methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, structural details, elevations, dimensions, tolerances, and layout information.
  • Ability to use measuring and layout tools to verify dimensions, elevations, alignment, and placement of civil construction components.
  • Working knowledge of anchor bolt, embed, sleeve, penetration, and blockout placement requirements.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and small construction equipment.
  • Understanding of industrial construction quality requirements, concrete tolerances, and inspection expectations.
  • Strong awareness of excavation hazards, underground utilities, suspended loads, mobile equipment, and other hazards associated with industrial civil construction.
  • Ability to recognize work that does not conform to drawings, specifications, or quality requirements and promptly communicate concerns to supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written work instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervision, equipment operators, quality personnel, safety personnel, and other craft employees.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work assignments, project priorities, and job-site conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled civil construction activities in accordance with project drawings, specifications, work instructions, and quality requirements.
  • Install, place, tie, support, and secure reinforcing steel in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Cut, bend, position, and assemble reinforcing materials using approved tools and methods as required.
  • Construct, set, align, brace, modify, and dismantle formwork for foundations, equipment pads, pedestals, pipe supports, containment structures, walls, slabs, and other industrial concrete installations.
  • Assist with civil layout using dimensions, elevations, benchmarks, grades, control points, and other project references.
  • Install and verify anchor bolts, embeds, sleeves, blockouts, reinforcing steel, and other components required before concrete placement.
  • Verify form dimensions, elevations, alignment, reinforcement, and embedded items prior to concrete placement and promptly report discrepancies to supervision.
  • Prepare areas for concrete placement, including form preparation, cleaning, and other required pre-pour activities.
  • Place, consolidate, vibrate, screed, level, finish, protect, and cure concrete in accordance with project specifications and quality requirements.
  • Perform concrete finishing activities using appropriate hand and power tools to achieve specified surfaces, elevations, slopes, and finishes.
  • Perform concrete repair, patching, grouting, and other corrective activities as assigned.
  • Strip and dismantle formwork following required curing periods and project procedures without damaging completed concrete.
  • Verify dimensions, elevations, alignment, and workmanship of completed work and communicate deficiencies to supervision.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and small construction equipment for which the employee is trained and authorized.
  • Assist with excavation preparation, backfilling, material handling, rigging, housekeeping, and other civil construction activities as assigned.
  • Coordinate work activities with equipment operators, spotters, rigging personnel, supervision, quality personnel, and other crafts.
  • Follow Company safety policies, applicable OSHA requirements, project procedures, and customer site requirements.
  • Participate in pre-task planning, JHAs/JSAs, toolbox talks, safety meetings, inspections, and required training.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist and immediately communicate safety concerns to supervision.
  • Inspect tools and equipment before use and immediately report damaged, defective, or unsafe tools or equipment.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the position's responsibilities.
