About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking two City Planners to assist with the expansion of its concession program within the Office of Cityscape & Franchises. This office oversees programs related to streetscape elements, including the growing Plaza and Open Street programs, and other concession opportunities. The City Planners will be involved in the planning, coordination, and management of concessions, public toilet installations, and franchises. They will also support the unit director with contract management, program management, database development, community outreach, presentations to the Public Design Commission and Community Boards, and coordination with various external entities and senior staff. Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills are required.

Requirements

  • Must be serving permanently in the title of City Planner, or be reachable on the City Planner civil service list.
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in city planning, urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation engineering, public administration, economic development or a related field; OR
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in city planning such as in the review and development of housing, transportation, environmental, and city-owned land planning projects; OR
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to the above.
  • Graduate education in city planning, urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation engineering, public administration, economic development or related fields may be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits from an accredited college or university for one year of experience.
  • All candidates must have a baccalaureate degree.
  • To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, two additional years of professional experience as described in '2' above.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and management of concessions, including those supporting the citywide Plaza and Open Streets programs.

  • Prepare and make submissions to the Public Design Commission.
  • Make Community Board presentations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with various Business Improvement Districts, other not-for-profit and private entities, and senior level staff.
