About The Position

The Children’s Wellness Worker Assistant will assist the Children’s Wellness Worker in offering a culturally integrated and holistic approach to health and wellness of children. They will promote a culturally safe, healthy, and supportive environment that instills a sense of dignity and respect.

Requirements

  • A Sagamok member/resident
  • A high school student with previous experience working with children.
  • Knowledge of sports, arts, or crafts is also necessary for the position.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Sign and maintain an annual oath of confidentiality.
  • Secure and maintain certification in Privacy and Confidentiality.
  • Must provide a criminal record check prior to commencing employment.
  • Incumbent is subject to three months’ probation.

Nice To Haves

  • Babysitting Certifications and/or first aid and CPR administration are an asset.
  • Participate in cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity training.
  • Ability to understand and speak Ojibwe will be considered a definite asset.
  • Local knowledge and understanding of Sagamok Anishnawbek’s services and will be considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to students who qualify for the ISET Subsidy Program

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance, guidance, and support to Sagamok Anishnawbek children who are seeking to strengthen family units, promote wellbeing and address various challenges faced by the family as directed by the Children’s Wellness Worker.
  • Develop engaging recreational activities for children
  • Lead small or large groups on crafts, swimming, kayaking, archery, family night, and various other camp exercises
  • Monitor children to identify and respond to unruly behavior or deviations from camp guidelines
  • Contact parents to relay information regarding their children’s camp experience and behavior
  • Maintain accurate record of camp activities and data such as attendance logs and incident reports
  • Implement policies for the safety of campers, equipment, and personal property
  • Act as a role model for campers in activities which require cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship
  • Administer emergency safety procedures such as CPR and first aid as may be required
  • Collaborate with Children’s Wellness Worker to develop and execute plans for daily activities
  • Establish camp regulations and guidelines necessary to maintain order within camp premises
  • Conduct inspections to ensure camp environment is clean and free of hazard
  • Lead campers in fire drills, as well as teach them emergency procedures and survival skills
  • Mediate disputes or conflicts between campers to ensure a peaceful environment
  • Participate in singing, storytelling, and sporting activities
