About The Position

The Children’s Librarian reports to the Youth Services Manager and is responsible for providing library services to children and families in and outside of the library. This position provides excellent customer service to library patrons, assists patrons and staff in meeting their reference and information needs, plans and conducts programs with a focus on children and their caregivers, promotes youth services to the community, manages assigned library collections, participates in the day-to-day operation of the library and administers other library services as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • One (1) year experience in library operations required (public library experience preferred).
  • Experience, knowledge, or training related to youth services preferred.
  • Excellent communication, project management skills, and strong customer service skills are required.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to work well with and relate to patrons of all ages, especially children and their caregivers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects from start to finish, time management, and prioritization skills to ensure tasks are completed on schedule.
  • Ability to creatively and effectively make decisions based on experience, knowledge, or training without supervision.
  • Considerable ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Proven ability to adapt quickly to changing needs within the library environment.
  • Knowledge of public library operations services and materials, including technologies relevant to libraries and library services.
  • Ability to understand policies and procedures and apply them to library operations.
  • Competency and experience using and supporting current digital devices and software, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, the Internet, Adobe Software Suite, iOS and Android platforms and devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging and meaningful content to market, publicize, and promote library services to the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of library patron information.
  • Ability to gather statistics, analyze information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to maintain a working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in youth services by attending workshops and professional meetings and reading current professional literature.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public in person or on the telephone.
  • Ability to project a friendly, efficient image on the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters requiring it.
  • Keyboarding and filing ability.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the youth services team to provide services to youth ages 0-12.
  • Develops feasible, realistic solutions to problems or questions.
  • Recommend changes or improvements in library operations to supervisors when appropriate.
  • Serve as the Librarian-in-charge when assigned.
  • Organize, prepare, and present fun and enriching events and programs for youth and families that encourage reading, literacy, and library use. Programming examples include story-times, parachute play, noon Year’s Eve party, outreach to local daycare facilities, schools, and organizations, the annual summer reading program, and passive programming.
  • Select materials for purchase for assigned collection areas according to the Collection Development and Selection Policy.
  • Maintain assigned areas by systematically evaluating currently owned materials and their collections.
  • Catalog items as needed.
  • Prepare informational and promotional materials about library events, programs, and resources, including press releases, flyers, displays, resource guides, calendars, and newsletters in print and non-print form.
  • Monitor developments as they relate to library services to children.
  • Collaborate with other agencies, special interest, and civic groups to promote library services to the community.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of trends in youth services by reading professional literature, participating in committees, the community, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Perform public relations duties, including interpreting library policies, responding to patron complaints, and assisting staff with difficult situations.
  • Assist in providing research assistance and readers’ advisory services to patrons of all ages.
  • Maintains contact with other City departments, Milwaukee Federated Library System, and other librarians located throughout the County, as well as library vendors to represent the needs of children ages 0-12.
  • Explore and recommend new library programs, services, and technologies to engage users and staff.
  • Maintain a working environment that sustains high employee morale, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Prepare and maintain library statistics as requested.
  • Coordinate work assignments and supervise the work of volunteers as directed.
  • Used budgeted funds and materials effectively and efficiently.
  • Perform other tasks and projects as assigned.
