About The Position

The Childcare Worker is responsible for providing effective childcare, supervision and developmental support for our YW Crisis Shelter, which supports women and children fleeing domestic violence. This role delivers play-based programming that supports children’s social, emotional and physical development. The Childcare Worker collaborates closely with the shelter team to ensure the services are comprehensive, consistent and services grounded in trauma informed and strengths-based practices. This is a part-time position with Kids Club, working Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Requirements

  • Early Learning and Childcare Diploma or equivalent
  • Level 2 Alberta Childcare Certification
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a Childcare Centre
  • Knowledge of domestic violence and its impact on families and children
  • Knowledge of the Province of Alberta’s childcare regulations and Alberta Health Standards for Childcare
  • Strong decision-making skills that demonstrate a practical and theoretical understanding of child development
  • Sound judgement and demonstrated ability to mitigate risk, remain calm, and react quickly to ensure the safety of children
  • Flexible and creative; ability to adapt and modify activities and play if necessary; open to implement new and different ideas in a team environment
  • Initiative in maintaining current knowledge child development practices and parenting strategies; openness and ability to incorporate feedback

Responsibilities

  • Provide attuned and responsive day-to-day care, guidance and programming for children 0 to 6 years old in a safe, secure and consistent environment
  • Implement programming that supports child development and creates a sense of security and safety
  • Maintain a child-friendly, stimulating playroom environment with age-appropriate materials and activities
  • Demonstrate flexibility and provide care in a manner that is sensitive to individual child differences, interests and needs; adjust care and tailor activities accordingly
  • Provide individualized attention to children who may need one on one support for behavioral or developmental challenges
  • Ensure all toys, activities and games are sanitized and in good working condition
  • Maintain accurate registration and daily attendance records in accordance with program and licensing standards
  • Understand and follow the province of Alberta Child Care licensing regulations, the City of Calgary fire regulations and Alberta Health Services regulations
  • Stay aware of allergies, medical needs, emergency medications and medication administration policies
  • Attend monthly staff meetings, stay informed of program updates, and participate in professional development opportunities
  • Provide mothers with opportunities for support and education around domestic violence and child development
  • Make referrals to Child and Youth Case Manager for counselling for children and other supports for children and mothers
  • Ensure program materials including emergency protocols for program are updated
  • Complete all required case notes and program reports and uphold confidentiality of privileged information
