About The Position

Prepares expectant mothers and support person for childbirth. Uses appropriate teaching principles and adult learning methods to deliver information on a variety of perinatal topics, including pregnancy, labor, comfort measures and pain management, delivery, cesarean birth (C-section), birthing alternatives, postpartum, baby care, and tools to use during childbirth. Increases consumers'/patients' awareness of the support services, learning opportunities, and resources that Sutter Health offers. Collaborates with peers and other healthcare providers to ensure classes are relevant and responsive to a diverse customer population, as well as meets department needs. Fosters a professional and collaborative relationship between women, their support groups, and health care professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Healthcare related field or equivalent education/experience
  • CCE-Certified Childbirth Educator OR CBE-Certifed Breastfeeding Educator OR IBLCE-Certified Lactation Consultant OR CBC-Certified Breastfeeding Counselor
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
  • 1 year recent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the child birthing process with a basic understanding of medical terminology, current trends in childbirth issues and practices, comfort measures/pain management, patient safety and privacy, and local/state/federal regulations.
  • Proven teaching and presentation skills, including the ability to clearly and professionally communicate complex or sensitive information to diverse audiences.
  • Basic knowledge of word processing, presentation, and email software, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Prioritize assignments and work within standardized guidelines to complete tasks with little supervision.
  • Identify and evaluate routine or standard problems, then select appropriate solution from established options.
  • Ensure the privacy of each patient’s PHI.
  • Work independently as well as be part of the team, while accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
  • Develop collaborative relationships to coordinate efforts and to address the expectation of the physicians, midwives, nurses, support, and management staff.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches classes for expectant mothers, siblings, patient support group, and new parents on a variety of topics including labor, birth, postpartum, newborn care and breastfeeding.
  • Routinely reviews and updates teaching materials and presentation(s) to reflect new information, integrate comments from class evaluation forms, incorporate physician feedback, address student’s needs, achieve cultural diversity while realizing department goals and objectives.
  • Fosters a positive relationship between women and Sutter Health, physicians, other healthcare providers, and the community.
