About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Child & Adolescent Mental Health and Crisis Program, the Child and Youth Intake Worker at the Shoniker Clinic will bring both a specialist and generalist role to the team. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be conducting psychosocial assessments and providing individual, family and group therapy to children and adolescents. The successful candidate will also be responsible for providing individual and group therapy utilizing substance abuse counseling techniques (i.e. motivational interviewing/harm reduction). The incumbent will also be responsible for providing consultation regarding substance abuse issues to other members of the interdisciplinary mental health team.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Child & Youth Work or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the child and adolescent mental health
  • Community College diploma in Addictions or certificate in Addictions and/or Concurrent Disorders preferred
  • Minimum 2 years experience in Addictions preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of issues related to alcohol/ drug dependence in an adolescent population and a strong commitment to working with this population in a non-judgmental manner
  • Training and experience in cognitive behaviour therapy and dialectic behaviour therapy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and applications of group therapy in clinical situations
  • Previous experience in assessment, crisis intervention, and the planning and development of therapeutic programming in an outpatient child & adolescent mental health clinic
  • Proven excellent communication (English oral and written), and interpersonal skills dealing effectively with clients, internal customers and the community
  • Excellent knowledge of community resources
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and relevant legislation
  • Demonstrated pattern of good attendance

Responsibilities

  • Conducting psychosocial assessments
  • Providing individual, family and group therapy to children and adolescents
  • Providing individual and group therapy utilizing substance abuse counseling techniques (i.e. motivational interviewing/harm reduction)
  • Providing consultation regarding substance abuse issues to other members of the interdisciplinary mental health team
  • Participating in liaison and referral with community resources
  • Functioning as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team
  • Participating in comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, environmental safety and in-service education
  • Demonstrating a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and the community and public
