About The Position

Children’s Hospital of Michigan is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive and cardiovascular. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Emergency Department is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center. Experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and neonatal and perinatal medicine provide care for thousands of children every year at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan - Troy and six ambulatory sites. Under the direction of the Child Life Services Department leader, this role provides educational services for hospitalized patients in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Child Life Teacher assists patients in completing schoolwork, plans and implements supplementary educational activities, and coordinates homebound services for those patients who are unable to return to school after discharge. They also maintain academic involvement with the patient’s home school by acting as a liaison between the hospital and the school, obtaining assignments and communicating special needs the patient may have upon re-entering the school environment. Appropriate patient chart notes regarding services rendered and information that could impact the patient are also provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
  • State of Michigan teaching certificate.
  • One to two years teaching experience in a school or other educational setting.

  • A special education endorsement is preferred but not required.
