About The Position

As a member of the healthcare team, the Child Life Specialist enables infants, children, adolescents and their families to maintain optimum development, realize normal living patterns, minimize psychological trauma and maximize adjustment as they adapt to changes in health, hospitalization and life situations. Through preparation, education, therapeutic play, and other intervention strategies, the pediatric population is provided with the opportunities in maximize coping.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Child Life Certification, or obtainable within 1 year of employment. (External applicants, or those not currently working as a CLS at HHS)
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience, within the last 3 years, as a Child Life Specialist in an acute, tertiary pediatric care setting
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in assessments, planning and interventions for children, adolescents and their families
  • Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to provide interventions on an urgent basis
  • Demonstrated organization, problem-solving and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide formal and informal education to health care team regarding the Child Life role, the psychosocial needs of children/adolescents related to care management
  • Demonstrated understanding the role of community supports for the child/adolescent and family
  • Knowledge and comfort supporting families with end of life issues

Responsibilities

  • Enable infants, children, adolescents and their families to maintain optimum development, realize normal living patterns, minimize psychological trauma and maximize adjustment as they adapt to changes in health, hospitalization and life situations.
  • Provide preparation, education, therapeutic play, and other intervention strategies to maximize coping for the pediatric population.
  • Provide formal and informal education to the health care team regarding the Child Life role and the psychosocial needs of children/adolescents related to care management.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the role of community supports for the child/adolescent and family.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Provide support to families with end-of-life issues.
