About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Child Care Assistant to help plan and deliver school-age childcare programs. This role involves promoting social interaction, personal development, and inclusion for children, as well as managing behavioral challenges and ensuring a safe and clean environment. The position requires effective communication with parents and adherence to child protection legislation. This is a temporary full-time position funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program, with specific age and eligibility criteria for applicants.

Requirements

  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Completed Secondary School.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification, Level C.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior work experience working with children (including special populations).
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors and volunteers are strictly confidential.
  • Able to lift 50lbs.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Must have physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure fast pace conditions.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous day camp experience will be recognized as an asset.
  • Completed a Babysitter’s Course.
  • Current Immunization.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input into planning and assist with the implementation of appropriate aged-based activities.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioral challenges.
  • Familiarize self with each child attending this program recognizing and supporting each of their individual needs.
  • Provide assistance with personal care as needed.
  • Assist with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, allergies, and facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid.
  • Routinely sanitize toys, inspect and dispose of hazardous items.
  • Communicate with parents and accountable for signing the children in and out.
  • Create a welcoming environment for all children and parents.
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Child Care Program Director or designate.
  • Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.
