About The Position

The Child & Youth Counsellor works with the multidisciplinary team providing behavioural counselling, group therapy, support, assessment and safety plans for patients and / or support networks and meal support and supervision. S/he supports the Eating Disorder Program day treatment program and classroom, teacher and educational activities and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment, care and discharge plans. This position would e available for all areas in Children’s mental health including Eating disorders, Day Hospital and CMH inpatient unit and crisis.

Requirements

• Child & Youth Worker Diploma (3 year program), or B.A. in Child & Youth Care
• Current membership in Ontario Association of Child & Youth Workers
• First Aid training
• CPR or Heart Saver training
• Crisis intervention training, e.g., Crisis Prevention Institute course or equivalent including crisis assessment, intervention and planning skills
• Three (3) to five (5) years relevant work experience
• Experience in a mental health setting
• Knowledge and professional applications in services for adolescents with severe mental health disorders
• Hospital / residential treatment experience, including classroom support and management
• Experience working on inter-professional team
• Systems approach; including client’s family, multidisciplinary team, education and community network considered important in work
• Regular and reliable attendance is an expected requirement of this position.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge and experience working with adolescents with eating disorders is preferred
• Experience with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, group therapy (both psycho-education and process-oriented groups) with adolescents, is strongly preferred
• Leadership skills, with demonstrated experience in taking initiative and program development
• Innovative and willing to learn

Responsibilities

• Providing behavioural counselling, group therapy, support, assessment and safety plans for patients and / or support networks and meal support and supervision.
• Supporting the Eating Disorder Program day treatment program and classroom, teacher and educational activities.
• Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team in planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment, care and discharge plans.
• Demonstrate experience and confidence in clinical skills, team participation and professional reports to staff, family, community and physicians.
• Demonstrate excellence in communication, both written and verbal.
• Analysis / problem assessment.
