The Chief Science & Technology Officer (CSTO) is a key member of the Leadership Team for the newly formed science Integrated Discovery Sciences Directorate (IDSD). This role provides leadership for the conception, development, and execution of internal investments to advance strategic objectives, including S&T leadership and capability development. The IDSD mission area delivers approximately $320M in annual sales and $350M in annual business volume to PNNL, executing programs for DOE's Office of Science programs, the National Institutes of Health, and evolving sponsors like NASA and ARPA-H/E. The CSTO stewards roughly $3-4M of seed Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) funding and has direct line responsibility for 3-4 chief/deputy science officers. This position is a key direct report to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) and works closely with the ALD, Director of Program Development (PDO), and PNNL’s Office of the Deputy Director for Science & Technology (DDST) to formulate strategy and ensure PNNL and IDSD are well-positioned for the future. The CSTO serves as a key leader in strategic decision-making, influencing lab-level and directing IDSD internal investments in science, technology, and capability development. This role promotes a culture of mentoring scientists and engineers, leading by example, and communicating strategy and successes across the laboratory. The CSTO also engages technical staff to empower a creative, productive, and innovative S&T environment and implements creative methods to develop the next generation of science leaders.
