About The Position

The Chief of Staff provides executive leadership and strategic oversight for operational aspects of the Office of One Health. Reporting directly to the VP/AVP for One Health, the Chief of Staff manages strategic initiatives, oversees operations, coordinates partnerships across academic and administrative units, and facilitates collaboration and communication among colleges, institutes, government agencies, industry, and community organizations. The position serves as the primary liaison between the Office of One Health and internal stakeholders while ensuring progress toward institutional One Health goals.

Requirements

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Accounting, Management or related field
  • five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial management and analysis, personnel management, and computer systems use and development
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in academic medicine, health sciences, biomedical or public health research, veterinary medicine, environmental health, or a One Health-related enterprise.
  • Experience supporting accreditation, regulatory, or professional/programmatic review processes, including LCME, COCA, or comparable bodies.
  • Experience integrating academic units, professional schools, clinical or research enterprises, or complex administrative functions across organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated success coordinating or advancing interdisciplinary initiatives, strategic priorities, research collaborations, funding initiatives, or faculty engagement and recruitment.
  • Experience developing and managing strategic partnerships with health systems, government, industry, foundations, donors, communities, or other external stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a multi-campus, statewide, distributed, or otherwise complex organizational environment, preferably involving academic, clinical, research, or community-based operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a trusted advisor and thought partner to the VP/AVP providing candid counsel on priorities, risks and stakeholders dynamics.
  • Partner with the VP/AVP to develop and implement the university's One Health strategic goals and objectives.
  • Translate strategic priorities into actionable initiatives with measurable outcomes.
  • Monitor institutional progress toward One Health goals and prepare executive reports and updates.
  • Identify and help implement emerging opportunities in research, education, and outreach.
  • Serve as a point of contact and problem-solver for internal and external partners seeking to engage with the office or resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Represent the VP/AVP in meetings and work projects, ensuring alignment with priorities.
  • Coordinate daily operations of the Office of One Health.
  • Support VP/AVP in prioritizing initiatives.
  • Plan and manage the VP/AVP meeting cadence with the President, Provost, Executive Dean of MSU Medicine, deans, and other senior leaders, ensuring the right issues reach the right forum at the right time.
  • Prepare agendas, briefing materials, talking points, and decision documents that are clear, evidence-based, and action-oriented.
  • Capture and distribute decisions and action items from key meetings, and track them through to completion.
  • Lead special projects requiring coordination across multiple colleges and units.
  • Develop executive communications; prepare presentations, reports, and briefing materials; coordinate annual reports.
  • Assist with budget planning and resource allocation; Monitor expenditures, as appropriate.
  • Oversee/supervise administrative staff.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies.
  • Supervise office staff and coordinate the work of the broader One Team, One Health strategy team, in partnership with the VP/AVP.
  • Model and foster a culture of integrity, respect, inclusion, and constructive collaboration.
  • Help build and foster trusted relationships across colleges, academic governance, and administrative units.

  • Support One Health certificate, degree, and professional development programs.
  • Promote experiential learning opportunities.
  • Facilitate student engagement initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison to external partners, particularly assisting in further strengthening relationships with Henry ford Health + MSU partnership.
  • Coordinate advisory boards and stakeholder engagement.
  • Represent the VP/AVP at meetings and events as appropriate.
