Chief of Staff to the Chief Communications Officer

About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is seeking a highly strategic, organized, and communications savvy Chief of Staff to support the agency’s Chief Communications Officer (CCO). This role sits at the center of one of the most dynamic communications operations in city government overseeing press, strategic communications, creative services, correspondence, and other functions. The Chief of Staff will serve as a force multiplier for the CCO ensuring alignment across teams, driving execution of high-priority initiatives, and helping translate big picture vision into day-to-day action. This is a fast-paced, high-impact role for someone who thrives in complexity, exercises strong judgment, and can move seamlessly between strategy and execution.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Responsibilities

  • Help drive execution of communications strategy across units in the Communications Division
  • Translate leadership priorities into clear workstreams, timelines, and deliverables
  • Track progress on key initiatives and ensure accountability across units
  • Identify operational gaps and implement systems to improve efficiency and coordination
  • Provide strategic advice and support to the CCO, helping prioritize time, resources, and focus
  • Support high-level decision-making with clear analysis and recommendations
  • Support coordination between Communications and other NYC DOT divisions
  • Ensure alignment and consistency of messaging across teams and stakeholders
  • Support staff coordination across a large, multi-functional team
  • Help build and maintain a high performance, collaborative team culture
  • Manage special projects and priority initiatives on behalf of the CCO
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and propose solutions to enhance efficiency within the Communications Division
  • Contribute to key communications initiatives, including podcast production, social media content, marketing, and other cross-unit initiatives
  • Supervise the division’s Civil Service Pathways Fellow
