About The Position

Genentech, Inc. seeks a Chief of Staff, Computational Center of Excellence at its South San Francisco, CA location. This role plays a critical role in planning and driving operations in the CoE’s, directing the vision, ensuring seamless execution of business strategy, and fostering cross-organizational collaboration. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for assisting and communicating with executives in decision-making, program management, and initiative implementation. They will act as a thought partner and trusted advisor to the Head of CoE on business, organizational, and operational strategies. The role involves managing CoE Leadership Team (“LT”) meetings, including preparing agendas, ensuring materials are sent in advance, time is well spent, and objectives are achieved. Additionally, the Chief of Staff will identify potential risks and opportunities in computational drug discovery initiatives, propose mitigation strategies, and monitor progress against key performance indicators. They will lead special projects supporting SVP decision-making that require inputs from multiple research and computational disciplines and drive cross-functional alignment across research, development, and computational teams in a timeline manner to ensure effective implementation of data science and machine learning initiatives. Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders across research, development, clinical, and external partnerships in the computational sciences ecosystem is also a key responsibility. The role requires independently leading and driving cross-functional initiatives, projects, or programs at a leadership level, developing new approaches to address complex organizational challenges that impact CoE and beyond, and facilitating resolution of issues relating to projects, priorities, and team dynamics. Requires up to 35% domestic and international travel (fully reimbursed). Telecommuting permitted up to 2 days per week.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Engineering, or related field
  • 7 years of experience in job offered or Project Manager, Operations Associate or Manager, or related leadership position in pharmaceutical or life sciences industry
  • Working in drug discovery and development to drive enterprise business priorities and identify strategic focus areas, including the application of computational sciences, data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate research and development outcomes.
  • Developing departmental and functional goals (including OKRs and balanced scorecards), tracking delivery of goals, and producing performance updates and reports to leadership to support development of commercial and clinical drugs.
  • Managing complex programs within R&D focused on the application of data science, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence to enable faster and improved delivery of drugs to patients.
  • Designing and implementing operating models, governance frameworks, and leadership ways of working, including leadership team operating cadences, decision rights, and meeting management to ensure decisions are made at the appropriate organizational level.
  • Identifying and delivering key functional engagements and events such as town halls, leadership offsites, and internal/external executive communications required by the leadership team to share strategic priorities and key achievements.
  • Facilitating regular resource and capacity discussions to develop plans to address priority resource shortfalls, including reallocation of current staff, hiring of contractor workers, and permanent staffing decisions across global sites.
  • Monitoring expenditure against agreed budget targets, identifying variances, and implementing corrective action in partnership with the finance function on multi-site budgets at scale.
  • Partnering with HR and leadership on talent development, strategic workforce planning, organizational design, and functional training programs to support enterprise capability-building.
  • Driving cross-organizational alignment between research and development organizations and managing engagement with executive-level internal and external stakeholders including scientific conferences, and strategic partnership discussions to ensure coordinated execution of research and computational sciences priorities.
