The Chief provides strategic leadership for Florida’s statewide Radiation Control Program, overseeing multidisciplinary teams dedicated to protecting residents and visitors from unnecessary radiation exposure. The Bureau’s programs regulate radioactive materials not under U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission jurisdiction, oversee radiologic technologist certification and continuing education, regulate x-ray and other radiation-producing equipment, coordinate radiological emergency response activities, conduct environmental radiation monitoring and studies, perform radiochemical analyses, and regulate nonionizing radiation users, as appropriate. Through these programs, the Chief directs one of Florida’s most comprehensive public health regulatory and emergency preparedness operations. This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.
