About The Position

Carle Health is seeking a Chief Medical Physicist – Radiation Oncology to serve as the senior clinical physics leader with system-wide oversight of medical physics services, ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant use of radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients across Carle Health Radiation Oncology sites in Urbana, Normal, and Peoria, Illinois. This role involves system-wide leadership of medical physics services across three Radiation Oncology sites, with the primary location in Urbana, Illinois, and travel to Normal and Peoria approximately twice per month. The Chief Medical Physicist will have oversight of all clinical medical physics functions, including external beam radiation therapy, stereotactic treatments, simulation, treatment planning, and image guidance. This includes ensuring accuracy and consistency of dose calculation, treatment planning, and chart review, and leading acceptance testing, commissioning, and implementation of new equipment and technologies. The position holds clinical authority for complex and high-risk physics decisions and directs quality assurance and quality management programs across all sites. Responsibilities also include ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and accreditation standards (IEMA, NRC, CMS, ASTRO/ACR, CoC), overseeing regulatory readiness, audits, and radiation safety programs. The role involves managing and mentoring medical physicists and dosimetrists, participating in recruitment, onboarding, evaluations, and staffing planning, and collaborating with physicians, therapists, and oncology leadership on clinical operations and strategic planning. Support for research and clinical trials requiring medical physics involvement is also expected. The Chief Medical Physicist reports to the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Institute leadership and includes people management and budget responsibility.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Physics required
  • Registered Therapeutic Radiation Physicist – Illinois Emergency Management Agency
  • ABR Certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics
  • Minimum 10 years in radiation oncology physics
  • At least 5 years of experience post–board certification
