About The Position

Altru Health System is seeking an accomplished physician leader to serve as Chief Medical Officer with a minimum commitment of 0.3 FTE. This executive leadership opportunity is ideal for a collaborative and visionary leader who is passionate about advancing quality, patient safety, and clinical excellence. The CMO will partner with physicians, operational leaders, and the executive team to foster innovation, strengthen physician engagement, and advance Altru's Mission, Vision, and Values. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Altru Health System provides strategic leadership and oversight for all clinical aspects of patient care, quality, and safety across the organization. This role is crucial in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective healthcare services while fostering a culture of clinical excellence and innovation.

Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD or DO) within specified field of medical practice from respective accredited institution.
  • Board certification in a recognized medical specialty.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of North Dakota or eligibility for licensure.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical leadership experience in a complex healthcare system.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quality improvement methodologies, patient safety initiatives, and clinical outcomes measurement.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare finance, regulatory compliance, and physician compensation models.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to lead change, drive innovation, and manage complex clinical operations effectively.
  • Commitment to upholding and modeling Altru’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements clinical strategies, policies, and procedures to enhance patient care quality, safety, and outcomes in alignment with Altru Health System's mission and vision.
  • Provides executive leadership and medical expertise for clinical operations, including physician practice management, medical staff affairs, and clinical service line development.
  • Oversees and champion quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and clinical risk management to achieve top-tier performance metrics.
  • Collaborates with the executive team to ensure financial stewardship, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth of clinical services.
  • Fosters strong relationships with medical staff, ensuring physician engagement, retention, and professional development.
  • Represents Altru Health System in community outreach, professional organizations, and governmental affairs related to healthcare.
  • Leads efforts in clinical research, medical education, and the adoption of new technologies and best practices.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies, accreditation standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Participates in strategic planning and decision-making processes to shape the future direction of the health system.
  • Mentors and develops clinical leaders within the organization.
