About The Position

As part of the senior management staff, the Chief Medical Officer participates in strategic planning for the medical center and assists, as needed, in matters related to the Medical Staff and Clinical Care Delivery Systems. This role serves as a liaison between the Medical Staff and Management, initiating, coordinating, and assisting in ongoing Medical Staff/medical center projects and activities. The Chief Medical Officer supports the Medical Staff organization in achieving its objectives, coordinates and provides staffing for Medical Staff committee activities, and serves as a resource, providing leadership and guidance. This position plans and implements programs to achieve Medical Staff goals, working closely with the Medical Staff President, other elected officers, and department chairpersons. The role fosters a positive relationship between the Medical Staff and the medical center, and serves as an integral member of the management team. Additionally, the Chief Medical Officer provides leadership for capacity management initiatives, coordinates patient care review systems, and directs a medical center-wide Performance Improvement Program. This role also serves as a liaison between the medical center and various medical directors, supports the medical center Medical Management program, guides medical staff continuing education, and develops relationships with physicians to support strategic initiatives. The Chief Medical Officer establishes short and long-range objectives and implements tactical plans, serves as a voting member of the Quality Joint Conference Committee, and performs human resources responsibilities for staff, including interviewing, selection, staff development, performance evaluations, and employee relations. This role also develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and ensures compliance with the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct.

Requirements

  • Medicine and Surgery, MD-DO license issued by the state in which the team member practices, and Psychiatry board certification issued by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine.
  • Typically requires 10 years of experience in medicine practicing as a physician.
  • Includes 7 years of experience in psychiatric, addictionology and other treatment modalities.
  • Includes 5 years of management experience in overseeing medical staff, performance improvement and quality programs.
  • Excellent Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • Excellent skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, negotiation and diplomacy.
  • Knowledgeable of Contemporary Practice Issues within Medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, direct and evaluate healthcare and medical staff activities.
  • Must be familiar with all aspects of hospital operations.
  • Requires excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable in Information Systems and Database Management
  • Dynamic Knowledge of Outcomes Measurement of Clinical Quality and Utilization.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in strategic planning for the medical center and assists in matters related to the Medical Staff and Clinical Care Delivery Systems.

  • Plans and implements programs as needed for and achieving Medical Staff goals.
  • Fosters and contributes to a close, mutually beneficial relationship between the Medical Staff and the medical center.
  • Serves as an integral member of the medical center's management team and works to foster positive team interaction to support medical center goals and projects.
  • Provides leadership for capacity management initiatives working with all disciplines to improve patient flow in support of optimal patient care.
  • Coordinates a system of patient care review through which the medical staff can monitor physician performance and the Credentials Committee can maintain appropriate physician privileges.
  • Directs a medical center wide Performance Improvement Program to include the establishment of standards of performance, monitoring mechanisms and outcomes tracking for appropriate medical center departments and the Medical Staff and communicates relevant summary information to appropriate areas.
  • Guides and directs the activities of the medical center's Performance Improvement Teams.
  • Works with leadership to develop and support the medical center-wide clinical effectiveness agenda.
  • Serves as a liaison between the medical center and various medical directors to assure appropriate communication and System response.
  • Provides support for the medical center Medical Management program.
  • Guides and supports medical staff continuing education activities.
  • Develops relationships with medical center and community physicians to support medical center strategic initiatives.
  • Establishes short and long-range objectives for assigned areas and implements tactical plans for their achievement in collaboration with medical staff and management personnel.
  • Serves as a voting member of the Quality Joint Conference Committee of the Metro Region Governing Board and represents the policies and needs of the staff to the Board.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.
