About The Position

Chief Mate of the passenger transfer vessel. Main duties related to the safe transfer of personnel, and emergency response as required. Ensure the safety of life, the vessel, and the prevention of marine pollution while working within the established health and safety guidelines, policies, and procedures of the Company.

Requirements

  • Chief Mate 500T COC issued by Transport Canada or from a country with reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada
  • MED training with respect to Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats
  • MED Advanced Fire Fighting
  • MED Basic Safety Training
  • Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC-MC) issued under the Radiocommunication Act
  • Marine advanced first aid
  • Transport Canada Marine Medical certificate
  • Ability to clear a drug and alcohol test prior to hiring and potential random tests throughout employment with prior notice
  • Excellent comprehension and command of the English language (written & verbal).

Nice To Haves

  • Several years of relevant experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Master in planning safe, timely, and realistic passages ensuring varied programming, maintaining crew morale, and keeping to the schedule.
  • Assist Master in all matters to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Oversee vessel maintenance including engineering, safety, structure, and rigging.
  • Ensure the vessel is operated in a safe manner in accordance with all Transport Canada and CSA regulations and requirements.
  • Ensure the vessel is operated with a focus on efficiency, minimizing fuel and supplies waste during operations.
  • Ensure compliance with the client's local project rules.
  • Operate the vessel in full compliance with regulatory, seafaring standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Ensure that the vessel has the required inventory of fuel and ship spares.
  • Complete pre-departure checks and inspections at regular intervals.
  • Provide daily reports for each vessel on fuel, labour, and other requirements as per policy and client billing, including damage and incident reporting.
  • Complete all handover logs, documents, reports, and action requests and ensure vessel handover is completed with the incoming captain and crew at the end of the shift.
  • Ensure crew levels are sufficient for successful operations pursuant to Safe Manning for the vessel.
  • Support the skills development of the crew, ensuring adequate support, training, and development of additional competencies by acting as a mentor for the crew.
  • Maintain a positive tone within the team and work cooperatively through personal behavior, work contribution, and the sharing of expertise and knowledge.
