About The Position

The Chief Mate is an essential member of Foss Maritime’s crew, supporting safe and reliable maritime services. The role assists the captain with towing, docking, and unloading barges and other vessels between ports. The Chief Mate is responsible for vessel and crew safety while docked and for the safe movement and navigation of the vessel and its tows while underway. The position also involves operating and selecting equipment, maintaining vessel documentation, recording crew hours, assisting with tug inspections, and following emergency procedures and Foss safety and vessel-management systems.

Requirements

Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document or Merchant Mariner Credential, with a minimum USCG 1600 GT Mate upon Oceans license, Mate of Towing Vessels upon Oceans, and STCW.
Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), passport, and USCG-issued Medical Certificate.
At least two years of vessel experience as a Deckhand, Deckhand/Engineer, or licensed deck officer.

Responsibilities

Assist the captain with towing, docking, and unloading barges and other vessels from port to port.
Steer, operate, push, and pull barges as directed by the captain to their destinations or berths.
While towing, monitor water depth, weather, surging, and other traffic, and keep the tow wire clear of the bottom, navigational aids, and other vessels.
Directly operate winches, engines, generators, electrical systems, and wheelhouse navigational electronics and devices.
Analyze each job and determine what equipment is best suited to handle it.
Use onboard platforms to maintain vessel documents in Helm.
Enter hours worked for crew members.
Follow proper procedures when handling emergency situations.
Assist with tug inspections and ensure compliance while learning Foss SMS/ISM/VMS.
Ensure the safety of the vessel and crew while docked and the safe movement and navigation of the vessel and its tows while underway.
