CEI Chief Inspector - Structures
About The Position
The Chief Inspector (Structures) serves as the on-site lead representative responsible for overseeing all construction engineering and inspection activities associated with bridges and other structures on related transportation infrastructure projects in Rhode Island. This position is responsible for managing and supervising a team of construction inspectors in the field, observing and inspecting contractor construction operations for compliance with RIDOT specifications, FHWA requirements, project plans, and quality standards, while safeguarding public safety, environmental compliance, and project delivery objectives.
Requirements
- NICET or PE certificate plus 6 years’ structural engineering experience and 2 years of field inspection experience.
- BSCE or NICET required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to work weekends, nights, and swing shifts as required on assigned projects.
Responsibilities
- Act as primary field representative between RIDOT, contractors, designers, and stakeholders.
- Lead and supervise a team of construction inspectors.
- Ensure material testing is compliant with project specifications and RIDOT Master Schedule of Testing requirements.
- Manage inspection assignments, schedules, and daily field operations.
- Ensure adherence to RIDOT Standard Specifications, Supplemental Specifications, and Standard Details.
- Oversee inspection of all bridge and structure construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance activities, including: Structural steel erection, concrete placement (substructure & superstructure), precast concrete installation and erection, bridge deck construction and overlays, pile driving and foundation work and formwork, falsework, and shoring systems.
- Verify construction compliance with approved plans, shop drawings, and contract documents.
- Monitor critical tolerances, alignment, elevations, and structural integrity.
- Ensure contractor compliance with RIDOT and FHWA standards, AASHTO requirements and OSHA safety regulations.
- Ensure temporary traffic control measures conform with approved project-specific Traffic Management Plan and Traffic Control Plans.
- Review and approve material certifications, concrete mix designs and shop drawings and working drawings (as assigned).
- Coordinate and verify material testing (concrete, steel, asphalt, etc.).
- Maintain project documentation including, daily inspection reports, non-compliance notices and working progress and quantity calculations.
