About The Position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior executive leader responsible for the overall financial strategy, long-term fiscal health, capital structure, and asset stewardship of the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer / Chief of Staff and working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors, the CFO provides strategic financial leadership to support organizational sustainability, growth, and mission impact. The CFO oversees the financial strategy of a complex nonprofit organization with: • An annual operating budget of approximately $14M • Ownership and management of more than 600 units of affordable rental housing • Active LIHTC development projects • HUD-funded programs, including HOME and HOME-ARP awards • Multi-entity real estate ownership and partnership structures The CFO provides executive oversight of the Accounting Department through the Controller and ensures that financial systems, reporting, and risk management practices support long-term organizational success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive financial leadership experience, including experience as a Controller or Chief Financial Officer.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and federal compliance requirements.
  • Experience with real estate development, multi-entity accounting structures, and capital financing strategies.
  • Experience working with boards and board committees.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop accounting and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO, COO, and senior leadership team.
  • Coordinates filing of annual tax returns (990, 1065, 1120) with the audit firm.
  • Manages cash flow on daily/weekly/short-term basis and produces monthly cash flow projections.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and long-range financial planning initiatives.
  • Develop multi-year financial projections and scenario modeling.
  • Evaluate financial implications of new initiatives, partnerships, and program expansion.
  • Assess the financial structure and risk profile of real estate projects and capital investments.
  • Ensure financial strategy aligns with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Oversee long-term sustainability and performance of organizational assets.
  • Monitor capital structure, reserves, liquidity strategy, and debt obligations.
  • Evaluate financing structures, including LIHTC transactions and other development funding sources.
  • Maintain relationships with financial institutions, lenders, investors, and external financial partners.
  • Ensure appropriate investment and reserve strategies are maintained.
  • Ensure strong systems of internal control across the organization.
  • Provide executive oversight of federal award compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the annual audit process and resolution of audit findings.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and all applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as lead staff to the Board Finance Committee and attend Board and appropriate committee meetings.
  • Advise the Board and executive leadership on financial risk and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Provide executive oversight and mentorship to the Controller.
  • Ensure the Accounting Department is appropriately structured and resourced.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and financial discipline.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to strengthen financial and operational alignment.
  • Support leadership development within the finance function to build organizational capacity.
