Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Department: Finance Status: Full-Time, Exempt Reports To: Chief Executive Officer Starting Compensation Pay: $220,000 - $250,000 PURPOSE: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as the organization's senior financial leader and a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. The CFO provides strategic oversight of all financial operations and partners with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to ensure long-term financial sustainability, operational excellence, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO helps guide the future of a $62 million nonprofit organization serving communities across Southern Illinois through 22 diverse programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Nonprofit accounting principles
  • Financial planning and analysis
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Grant and contract management
  • Financial compliance and risk management
  • Strategic organizational planning
  • Seven to ten years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably within a nonprofit or other mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit, and compliance functions.
  • Experience managing multiple funding sources, grants, and contracts.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide executive-level leadership, develop and mentor high-performing teams, manage performance and accountability, lead organizational change initiatives, and foster collaboration across departments while aligning financial operations with strategic organizational goals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, business acumen, financial analysis, strategic thinking, attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to interpret and communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations that support executive and board-level decision-making.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with executive leadership, board members, auditors, funding agencies, financial institutions, community partners, and staff.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, collaboration, transparency, integrity, and the ability to influence and lead through strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial and operational issues, identify risks and opportunities, evaluate alternatives, exercise sound judgment, and make strategic decisions that support organizational sustainability.
  • Demonstrates the ability to navigate ambiguity, develop proactive solutions, and balance short-term operational needs with long-term strategic objectives.
  • Proficient Computer Skills In: Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Microsoft Excel functions, financial reporting systems, accounting software, budgeting and forecasting tools, data analysis applications, and virtual communication platforms.
  • Expert Computer Skills In: Advanced financial modeling, forecasting, data analysis, and reporting tools used to support strategic planning, organizational performance monitoring, and executive decision-making.
  • Ability to oversee organizational budgets, financial resources, investments, grants, contracts, and funding streams while ensuring effective stewardship of agency assets.
  • Ability to allocate resources strategically, monitor financial performance, and support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, audit management, internal controls, regulatory compliance, cash management, investment oversight, grant accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to evaluate financial implications of organizational initiatives and recommend data-driven strategies.
  • Must display a willingness to adopt trauma-informed principles and practices and demonstrate a commitment to fostering a workplace culture built on safety, trust, collaboration, empowerment, and respect.
  • Recognizes the impact of trauma on employees, clients, and communities and incorporates trauma-informed approaches into leadership, communication, decision-making, and organizational practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute financial strategies that support organizational growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead organizational budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and scenario modeling efforts.
  • Provide strategic financial counsel to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee accounting, financial reporting, cash management, investments, audits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting across multiple grants, contracts, and funding sources.
  • Strengthen financial systems, internal controls, and business processes to improve efficiency and decision-making.
  • Monitor financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, and develop proactive solutions.
  • Evaluate financial implications of strategic initiatives, partnerships, acquisitions, and organizational growth opportunities.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance team.
  • Serve as Secretary/Treasurer for Caritas Family Solutions' supporting boards in accordance with organizational bylaws.
  • Collaborate with organizational leadership to align financial strategy with mission-focused objectives.
  • Support a culture of accountability, transparency, and stewardship throughout the organization.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
