About The Position

The Chief Engineer's position is responsible for maintaining the entire hotel facility, including the physical structure, all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems, and related equipment, in accordance with energy conservation and preventive maintenance programs. This role ensures the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel and manages all rehabilitation, expansion, and special projects.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and from an apprenticeship and/or advanced training program for operating engineers, recognized by the industry and trade, or any other combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Five years’ experience as a journey mechanic or engineer with a class A hotel company or related industry.
  • Two years’ experience as a head or assistant chief engineer in the same or similar environment.
  • Any licenses or permits that may be required by law or company regulations, such as an electrician’s license.
  • Must be EPA certified in safe use and handling of refrigerants used at the property.
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical systems, components and devices, HVAC systems, boilers, mechanical systems; and the maintenance and repair of all.
  • Excellent knowledge of public construction and building systems, all related permits and licensing, and new and existing codes pertaining to public building and fire safety.
  • Skill in use of computers and software programs associated with engineering.
  • Skilled in the proper and safe use of all tools, equipment, materials, chemicals, and products relating to the department.
  • Excellent English, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to remain informed on state-of-the-art developments affecting the safe and effective operation of the building facility.
  • Ability to analyze all associated systems as to their design, intent and effective performance.
  • Ability to positively communicate and instruct team members, offering assistance in areas where they lack knowledge, skills or experience.
  • Able to rephrase or ‘translate’ fairly technical information into terms a layperson can easily understand.
  • Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly.
  • Must be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately.
  • Must work well in stressful, high-pressure situations, including ability to handle guest objections and disputes to satisfactory results.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the entire hotel facility, including physical structure, mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and related equipment.
  • Ensure the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel.
  • Manage all rehabilitation, expansion, and special projects.
  • Supervise engineers and ensure they are properly trained.
  • Actively participate in energy conservation programs.
  • Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Assist with the administration of all vendor contracts controlled by the Engineering Department.
  • Assist in developing and controlling wage/salary, other expenses, and energy budgets.
  • Assist in developing financial forecasts and participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings.
  • Repair and program hotel electronic lock system.
  • Maintain appropriate supply of materials and equipment.
  • Maintain organized and efficient administrative and filing systems.
  • Maintain a well-defined and organized system within the shop for inventory, maintenance, and storage of tools, products, materials, and equipment.
  • Be immediately available to report to the hotel in the event of any hotel emergency.
  • Assist in scheduling preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Attend meetings/training as required by management.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
