About The Position

The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of the hotel, ensuring that all facilities are in good working order and meet brand standards. This role involves both proactive preventative maintenance and reactive repair of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as managing capital improvement projects. The Chief Engineer will also ensure the safety and efficiency of all maintenance operations, manage tools and equipment, and properly handle chemicals and hazardous materials. A key aspect of the role is to act as a guest relations ambassador, ensuring positive interactions and guest satisfaction.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of management or supervisory experience in a hotel.
  • Experience with HVAC, electrical, carpentry, dry walling, painting, plumbing, roofing, and landscaping.
  • Ability to perform in a high-paced environment with multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Self-starting personality with an even disposition.
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and manner at all times.
  • Ability to communicate well with guests.

  • Adhere to hotel security policies and procedures, particularly regarding key controls, lifting heavy objects, using chemicals, and reporting safety hazards and concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of guestrooms, public spaces, and back-of-house areas.
  • Develop and implement a detailed preventative maintenance program to prevent equipment failures.
  • Manage and execute capital improvement plans to maintain the hotel's appeal.
  • Schedule, direct, and follow up on all maintenance projects to ensure completion.
  • Ensure the availability, organization, and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Manage the proper use and storage of chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and efficiently.
  • Interview, hire, train, evaluate, resolve problems, and manage performance of engineering staff.
  • Troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in mechanical or electrical systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing) and other hotel equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance assignments.
  • Respond courteously to guest requests, complaints, and questions to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Communicate with hotel department heads to identify maintenance needs and respond to internal requests.
  • Service the hotel's pool, including chemical balancing and filter cleaning.
  • Maintain the building exterior and 'curb appeal,' including snow removal, lawn care, painting, and gardening.
  • Ensure compliance with franchise standards and address inspection deficiencies.
  • Coordinate the compliance of service contracts.
  • Implement and maintain the PMHS preventative maintenance program, room care programs, and engineering department minimum standards.
  • Assist the General Manager with annual capital plan development.
  • Participate in PMHS safety plans and energy improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to provide direction to staff.
  • Comply with attendance rules and be available to work on a regular basis.
  • Perform any other job-related duties as assigned.
