Chief Engineer, Power Generation

Fluidstack•Austin, TX
•$263,000 - $330,000•Onsite

About The Position

Fluidstack aims to make humanity more free by developing AI infrastructure. They are focused on delivering gigawatts of compute power faster than anyone else by rethinking every layer of the stack, including acquiring power, designing and building data centers, and operating them. The company values speed, scale, and a deep commitment to the problem space of AI and human freedom. They operate with a philosophy of full autonomy, insane urgency, reasoning from first principles, and a love for tackling challenging problems. The Energy Team at Fluidstack is responsible for critical aspects of power generation infrastructure. This includes rapidly deploying solar, storage, and gas generation at gigawatt scales, securing and reshoring constrained supply chains for components like cells, containers, transformers, and turbines, and ensuring hybrid power plants deliver steady, reliable energy for AI workloads. The team also navigates complex regulatory environments, securing balancing authority certification, firm load rights, permits, and interconnections years in advance of construction.

Requirements

  • Experience running a production system based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) or a direct derivative, learned through hands-on experience under a mentor.
  • Proven ability to set takt time on a production line, balance it with actual cycle times, and maintain standard work during demand ramps that pressure deviation.
  • Demonstrated success in reducing process cycle time or defect rates, with specific examples of before/after metrics and the changes implemented.
  • Experience stopping a production line or instructing a site to halt operations when standards are not met, and successfully enforcing these decisions with superiors.
  • Track record of developing suppliers on their own premises, modifying their manufacturing processes for a part, and observing improvements in incoming quality.
  • Ability to teach TPS principles to individuals resistant to learning, and to establish engineers who can independently conduct A3s and kaizen events.
  • Clear and concise writing skills, capable of producing documents that provide necessary decisions for fabrication supervisors, site superintendents, and CEOs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience within a Toyota group company or a TPS-derived operating system (e.g., Toyota, Danaher DBS, Boeing, Tesla).
  • Experience with modular and offsite construction methods (e.g., volumetric modules, skidded MEP, prefabricated power blocks).
  • Lean Six Sigma certification at the Black Belt level.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing quality and execution systems (MES, SPC, APQP, and PPAP).
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Responsibilities

  • Own the production system for Fluidstack's generation builds, from module fabrication through field installation and energization, creating a standardized set of work instructions for concurrent gigawatt sites.
  • Set takt time and line balance for module and skid manufacturing, ensuring adherence through standard work and escalation processes, targeting first-pass yield rather than expediting.
  • Drive improvements in installation rates and reduction of rework in the field by conducting kaizen events and value stream mapping with on-site crews during their shifts.
  • Enhance supplier quality by conducting process audits, implementing error-proofing, and collaborating on joint improvement initiatives on their production floors, integrating all fixes into the standard design via change control.
  • Disseminate the production methodology across the organization by coaching engineers, site leads, and contractors in A3 problem-solving techniques to ensure the system's sustainability without direct supervision.

Benefits

  • Commitment to pay equity and transparency.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Employer status.
