About The Position

Eaton’s corporate Research Labs team is seeking a Chief Engineer to support Computational Methods (e.g. Quantum Computing), Technologies and Applications for Power Systems / Grid Intelligence. This position can be based in one of the following locations within the US: Golden, CO, Raleigh, NC, or Menomonee Falls, WI. Relocation assistance is available to Golden, CO only. Up to 25% travel is expected on average. The expected annual salary range for this role is $154000 - $225000 a year. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program. The Chief Engineer – Advanced Computing for Grid Applications will initiate, lead, and create research and develop emerging computation (such as quantum computing) technology programs as part of Energy Systems portfolios. This leader will develop solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders at the highest levels within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding (including US Government). As the Chief Engineer you will be a recognized authority in the field, work closely with other power system engineers and intelligent computing experts, to develop the technology and strategies within the Energy Systems team. You will be a principal investigator on key projects responsible for developing and meeting project schedules, defining scope of work, cost, technical targets for and report preparation for all research and innovation themes. As the subject matter expert within ERL’s Energy System globally you will develop and maintain relationships with the external technical community (academia, national labs, government agencies, industry groups, international connections), mentor staff and consult with key internal stakeholders, and customers.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related programs from an accredited institution plus a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, OR a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related programs from an accredited institution plus a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the research or power industry on computation related domain.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship both now and in the future. Eaton will not consider applicants in need of employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on government proposals, programs, or contracts within an organization.
  • Strong experience as a Principal Investigator or Innovation Leader in a research/academic setting.
  • Good experience with industry and business partners regarding product and application development.
  • Experience with advanced computing for grid and energy systems application concepts (for example but not limited to quantum-inspired algorithms, hybrid algorithm strategies).
  • Familiarity with computation platforms (for example, commercial quantum computation platforms, HPC), AI/ML or GPU based systems.
  • Experience with power system real-time simulations, hardware-in-the-loop platforms, and advanced numerical methods for energy systems.
  • Adaptable, eager to learn emerging technologies, and capable of bridging theory with practical implementation.
  • Expertise with Advanced Computing for Power Grid Applications, candidates should have experience in advanced computational methods for power systems (such as quantum-inspired algorithms and/or high-performance computing).
  • Extensive experience in leading engineering groups and mentoring engineering talent to develop concepts and prototypes for demonstrations and productization, especially in the face of unknown or incomplete requirements.
  • Extensive experience in developing proposals and winning government-funded programs related to power systems.
  • Abilities and documented track record leading externally-funded programs, interacting with customers’ and partners’ advanced research and development organizations.
  • Business acumen with proven record of formulating value proposition. Able to identify strong business alignment with the government funding opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Create and define research and technology focused themes, participate in defining technology investment strategy and lead complex global technology realization programs on power systems for Energy Systems global portfolio.
  • Work with Directors and Senior Managers across Eaton globally to define technical competencies and capabilities that will be required to support technology strategy, including defining and/or refining lab technical capabilities and requirements and working with leadership team to attract technical talent.
  • Create emerging Energy Systems research programs based on breakthrough technologies necessary for energy transition, reliability, and efficiency through exploration and early adoption of “Advanced Computing for Grid Applications” technologies and tools.
  • Further advance state of the art energy and power systems as well as to identify and develop commercialization opportunities with Eaton’s diverse global businesses.
  • Own technical leadership through Advanced Computing for Grid and Grid-connected Energy Systems Applications, develop roadmaps and support collaboration with multi-disciplinary globally distributed teams.
  • Identify program/project risks and influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere/kill decisions.
  • Influence, resolve, and communicate major changes in projects or program achievements to cross functional teams across all levels.
  • As a recognized global authority in advanced computing for grid applications and power system intelligent applications, you will coordinate and influence the research focus of partnering university consortiums and national lab initiatives.
