About The Position

The Economic, Development & Planning Department is seeking a Chief Electrical Inspector. This position will oversee a team of Electrical Inspectors, assuring the practices of installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems on residential, commercial, and industrial property standards are met. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to use their supervision skills and knowledge of Michigan Residential, National Electrical Codes and related code standards within the City of Lansing. Requirements

  • A valid State of Michigan Electrical Inspector & Plan Reviewer license is required and must be retained for the entire course of employment in this position.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Seven (7) years or more of experience with electrical systems of which three (3) years must have involved conducting electrical inspections.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • International Code Council Certification as an Electrical Inspector preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates work of subordinate Electrical Inspectors and provides them with needed work direction and training.
  • Enforces and interprets the Electrical Code and all other applicable rules and regulations which affect electrical systems being installed or repaired in the City of Lansing.
  • Ensures unsafe electrical systems are either condemned or shut-off in cases where public safety is a factor.
  • Provides assistance as required in inspecting rental properties.
  • Performs a wide range of administrative duties including maintaining inspection records and writing reports as required.
  • Reviews construction plans and other documentation when requested by other City staff members.
  • May be on call to help the Fire Department investigate causes of fires.
  • Writes violation letters to contractor and homeowners and performs proper follow-ups as required.
  • Works with the City Attorney's Office regarding the necessary prosecution of legal cases.
  • Investigate complaints from consumers regarding electrical installations by contractors.
