About The Position

Marine Atlantic is seeking Chief Electrical Engineers (Journeyperson Electricians) to work onboard vessels operating between Port aux Basques NL, North Sydney NS, and Argentia NL. These are permanent, spare, and relief positions scheduled across the fleet based on operational requirements. The Chief Electrical Engineer reports directly to the Chief Engineer and functionally to the Master, and is responsible for all electrical and electronic equipment and control systems on board. This role is crucial for maintenance planning, refit/dockside maintenance, capital projects, electrical enhancements, annual budgets, and the five-year plan. It is a leadership position responsible for supervising all Electrical Engineers, managing and developing the team, reinforcing company values, and ensuring adherence to the collective agreement.

Requirements

  • Interprovincial Red Seal Electrician Certification OR a combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.
  • Proven leadership skills, including demonstrated success with leading, motivating, mentoring, and growing a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Previous work-related experience relative to various machinery configurations, control and alarm systems.
  • Ability to keep accurate up-to-date records.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to obtain a Transport Canada Marine Medical.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous relevant work experience in a marine environment.
  • Experience and/or training in marine electrical/electronics.
  • Familiarity with computerized preventative maintenance systems.
  • Marine STCW 6.1 and 6.2 Courses, including valid MED refresher.
  • Passenger Safety Management.
  • Marine Advanced First Aid Certificate.
  • Transport Canada Marine Medical.
  • Familiarity with the use of Electronic Maintenance Management Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a physically and psychologically safe working environment that is diverse, accessible, inclusive, and equitable.
  • Oversee all Electrical and Electronic equipment and Control systems.
  • Supervise all Electrical Engineers and assign work activities.
  • Ensure all work is conducted safely, following established safety procedures.
  • Ensure all electrical and electronic equipment on the vessel is fully operational and safe for use by Marine Atlantic Departments and outside Contractors.
  • Ensure all work permits are issued and complete.
  • Create work lists for Electricians and assign Planned Maintenance cards (CMMS) for their shift.
  • Meet with the Chief Engineer regarding outstanding work.
  • Remain in the Engine Control Room during arrivals, departures from Port, and any ship maneuvering.
  • Prepare lists of items for refit maintenance.
  • Ensure electrical supplies are requested in a timely manner with complete specifications, following Marine Atlantic procurement policies.
  • Ensure electrical supplies are received and available as required.
