About The Position

The Associated Students (A.S.) is seeking a Chief Elections Officer for the 2025 Student Elections Commission (SEC) Elections. This part-time, temporary role is ideal for a student looking to develop leadership skills, coordinate events, and lead the election of the next Board of Directors. Serving on the SEC offers benefits such as planning and overseeing the largest student body election at SJSU, creating positive campus change, learning to handle real-world issues, gaining transferable leadership and delegation skills, and working with talented students and mentors.

Requirements

  • Must be a matriculated student at SJSU.
  • Must be in good standing with SJSU.
  • Must not be on probation of any kind (e.g., academic, administrative, judicial, etc.).
  • Must maintain a cumulative on-campus GPA of at least 2.0 while in office and the semester running for office.
  • Must maintain the minimum unit load (6 units for undergraduate students and 3 units for graduate students).
  • Must have no more than 150 cumulative units throughout the term being served.
  • Able to work with others as a team.
  • Able to handle conflicts.
  • Have an understanding of Robert’s Rules of Order and Gloria Romero.
  • Able to make ethical decisions when required.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Be knowledgeable about the Elections Regulation Manual (ERM) and Student Conduct Code.
  • Understand the structure of the Associated Students.
  • Be knowledgeable in student trends/needs to increase student engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the chairperson of election meetings and events, including being the main spokesperson and support at Elections Events.
  • Preside over all meetings and provide an agenda in accordance with the Gloria Romero Open Meeting Act of 2000 and A.S. Bylaws.
  • Understand the Elections Regulation Manual and how to apply it when needed, adding in addendums on an as needed basis.
  • Suggest edits to the Elections Regulation Manual to the next Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with Leadership and Government Coordinator and team to utilize the annual SEC budget in accordance with the A.S. Budget Policies.
  • Interview and select SEC Officers and Consultants.
  • Lead a team in planning Election marketing and events.
  • Maintain office hours during the election cycle (November to April).
  • Meet with SEC Advisor weekly.
  • Submit a written and oral report on the status and activities of the SEC to the AS Board on Wednesdays at 3 PM.
  • Responsible for coordination and promotion of Special Elections of Bylaws if needed.
