About The Position

The Chief Counsel provides direct support to all Deputy Attorneys General and other personnel assigned to the Advisory Division in the discharge of their various duties and responsibilities. This direct support includes supervising Advisory Division personnel, recommending assignments, providing input on personnel evaluations, and serving as a resource.

Requirements

• Licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana
• Exceptional skills in writing, research, and editing
• Exceptional communication skills
• Ability to analyze complex questions and law
• Ability to effectively supervise personnel
• Ability to competently manage agency relationships and communications
• Knowledge and skill in Indiana law, administrative law, contract management, public access requirements, “open door” applications, and board relations

Responsibilities

• Serve as the direct supervisor of Advisory Division personnel in the daily discharge of the responsibilities of this office.
• Prepare effective formal and informal communications to state agencies and other entities.
• Craft responses to public access requests.
• Assign personnel to various tasks, including counsel to boards or other governmental entities, service as administrative law judges, and designation as lead author on advisory opinion requests.
• Review, approve, or craft contracts, grants, leases, regulations, memoranda of understanding, and other documents of a similar nature.
• Speak publicly on matters affecting the Advisory Division and the Office of the Attorney General.
• Communicate effectively with the public and with those entities and persons reliant upon the Office of the Attorney General for legal services.
• Assist in the equitable evaluation of personnel, pursuant to office procedures.
• Participate in any interviews of candidates for employment or internship.
• Serve as a resource to personnel with respect to any function of the Advisory Division and its personnel.
• Work cooperatively with all other divisions of the Office of the Attorney General to enhance the overall collegial atmosphere.
• Discharge any additional responsibilities required by Chief Deputy.
