About The Position

Reporting to the VP of Student Affairs, the Chief of Police will be responsible for directing the personnel and resources in the University Police Department in a manner that best provides for the safety and security of the members of the campus community. Must be thoroughly knowledgeable in concepts of modern law enforcement and community policing and be able to provide leadership, direction and administration to a large complex organization.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice preferred, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Seven years of full time supervisory law enforcement experience in an urban and/or campus setting including administrative experience.
  • Two current or previous years of experience serving as a Chief (Assistant/Deputy) within a University Police Department.
  • Investigative supervisory skills, including oversight of confidential and sensitive investigations.
  • Demonstrated experience in crime analysis and development of appropriate response plans.
  • Demonstrated experience in special events planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with internal/external groups in an effort to problem solve.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)

Responsibilities

  • Directs senior managers and all sworn and non-sworn personnel in the Department in the daily operations and functions of University Police.
  • Formulate crime prevention strategies, patrol requirements and research and development for training needs.
  • Develops policy, structure and staffing necessary to maintain maximum effectiveness of the Department.
  • Conduct crime analysis, disseminate crime statistics and produce appropriate reports and follow up protocols.
  • Effectively manage all administrative duties, working closely with Human Resources on all employment matters.
  • Supervises crime scenes and coordinates collection of evidence.
  • Establish and maintain liaison and professional relationships with other government agencies.
  • Interface with the President, VP s, AVP s, Deans, and senior management staff on matters of mutual concern.
  • Ensures that effective operational plans are developed and implemented for special events ensuring the safety and security of all involved in accordance with best practices.
  • Supervise subordinate Deputy Chiefs and Inspectors regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Directing all sworn and non-sworn personnel in the University Police Department on a daily basis.
  • Oversee the Parking Enforcement Services Division.
  • Ensure Transportation Enforcement liaisons with the University s Conferences and Special Events Office to ensure compliance with parking policies during University events.
  • Develop operational plans for large scale events including, but not limited to commencements, spring and fall concerts, Homecoming, sporting events and other details requiring policing coverage.
  • Play an integral role in the Workplace Violence and Violence Against Women Act Committees on campus in conjunction with the Title IX Coordinator and the Counseling Center.
  • Participate in campus survey walk throughs of virtually every area and Department on campus.
  • Provide expertise, insight and knowledge towards the success of the two programs.
  • Meet with campus and off campus community members regarding problem solving policing matters.
  • Collaborate with campus community to partner in the design and implementation of campus wide workplace violence prevention programs.
  • Public discussions and outreach programs at governmental agencies and all facets of the Shaw University community will be required.
  • Liaison with local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies to discuss mutual areas of concern.
  • All other related duties as assigned.
