About The Position

The Chief Business Officer (CBO) works in close partnership with the Executive Vice President (EVP) for Educational and Medical Staff Affairs to advance the strategic, educational, research, clinical, and administrative priorities of the Office of Health Sciences Education (OHSE). Serving as the primary point of contact for departmental fiscal and administrative matters, the CBO role ensures effective coordination, operational excellence, and alignment with institutional goals. The CBO serves as a senior member of the OHSE leadership team and is accountable for translating institutional strategy into operational execution across OHSE programs. The CBO provides leadership, strategy, governance, policy development, compliance, risk management, financial management, budget administration, personnel management, workforce planning, organizational culture, facilities, space, and equipment management for the Center for Programs in Allied Health (CPiAH), Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA), Graduate Medical Education (GME), Office for Continuous Professional Development (OCPD), Medical Center Relations (MCR), Aspirnaut, OHSE Central Finance & Administration, and Shade Tree Clinic. This role exercises delegated authority on behalf of the EVP for designated operational, financial, and administrative decisions and serves as the primary escalation point for business operations within OHSE.

Requirements

  • Bachelors’ degree
  • minimum of seven years demonstrated strategic management experience including budgets, financial reports and the ability to navigate and interface with multiple departments in the organization and supervising direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the EVP in institutional forums as needed
  • Support execution of institutional strategy
  • Work collaboratively with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM)
  • Participate in departmental and institutional meetings and programs as a representative of the EVP
  • Develop and manage complex budgets
  • Drive financial performance
  • Produce timely and clear financial reports, analyses, and recommendations to the EVP, as well as departmental and institutional leaders
  • Oversee departmental fiscal and administrative matters.

  • Provide sound personnel and payroll administration to ensure internal salary equity and compliance with policy
  • Perform workforce planning and staffing needs assessments aligned with programmatic and strategic priorities
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, service quality, and stakeholder experience
  • Promote data-informed decision-making and partner with analytics and information technology teams to support financial, grants, workforce, and space management systems
  • Ensure appropriate data governance, system access controls, and information security practices for OHSE operations
  • Formulate and administer policies and procedures for management and maintenance of departmental space and facilities
  • Make space allocation, facilities utilization, and equipment purchase recommendations consistent with strategic priorities
  • Consult and coordinate with Vanderbilt Health services for maintenance, renovation, and other facilities-related services
  • Develop long-range space and capital plans aligned with educational, research, and programmatic growth
  • Evaluate space utilization and prioritize capital requests using data-driven analyses
  • Ensure facilities, space, and equipment comply with safety, regulatory, accreditation, and environmental requirements
