About The Position

Plans, directs, and supervises the City's building inspection activities. This role involves developing and establishing policies for efficient operation, selecting, training, and supervising personnel, and setting performance standards. The Chief Building Official also develops public relations efforts to inform citizens and staff about services, recommends revisions to building codes, prepares and administers the operating budget, and performs related duties as directed.

Requirements

• Completion of a bachelor degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or a related field with an additional five to seven years of experience in building construction or inspection, including management experience
• International Code Council Certified Building Official
• Valid Current Driver's License
• Knowledge of pertinent local and state codes and ordinances
• Knowledge of enforcement procedures
• Knowledge of building construction methods and practices
• Ability to read and interpret codes and ordinances
• Ability to prepare reports
• Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications
• Ability to supervise the work of others
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other City officials, builders, and the public
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Responsibilities

• Develop and establish policies insuring the efficient operation of the City's building inspection activities
• Select, train, and supervise personnel directly or through subordinate supervisors
• Establish performance standards, evaluate the performance of subordinate staff, establish work priorities, goals, objectives, and schedules
• Develop and administer public relations effort to inform citizens or internal staff of services provided, promote effective citizens and staff relations
• Recommend revisions of building electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes
• Prepare and administer operating budget
• Perform related duties as directed
