Job Summary We are currently seeking a Chemist – Entry Level. This position is a great opportunity located in Dugway, UT. Battelle's Weapons Destruction Training Center (WDTC) is seeking a Chemist to support analytical laboratory operations and training delivery in a chemical agent and simulant environment. The selected candidate will generate and obtain data, evaluate results, define problems, and design experiments in support of ongoing research and testing activities. In addition to laboratory responsibilities, this role includes developing training course materials and delivering instruction to student groups across classroom and laboratory settings. The successful candidate will adapt curriculum to varying knowledge levels — from students with little to no chemistry background to those with advanced subject matter expertise — while fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, other physical science, or engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience
Proficiency in gas chromatography, spectroscopy, or other analytical instrumentation used in laboratory environments
Demonstrated ability to generate, collect, and evaluate data; define problems; and design experiments
Capability to plan and execute projects with nominal guidance
Capable of leading classroom and laboratory instruction, providing clear and concise instruction, and guiding students through laboratory activities
Excellent computer skills, including database entry and management (e.g., Windows OS, Microsoft Access, MS Office Suite)
Strong self-initiative with the ability to work independently and prioritize, schedule, and organize work effectively
Sufficient medical fitness to work with highly toxic materials and perform assigned laboratory and field duties
Must achieve and maintain certification in required subject areas
Ability to comply with mandatory drug testing requirements in accordance with Battelle's drug-free workplace policy
This position requires US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Responsibilities

Develop training course materials, including lesson plans, instructional content, laboratory activities, practical exercises, and supporting course documentation
Serve as an instructor for developed course materials, delivering classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction to course students and supporting achievement of student learning objectives
Adapt curriculum delivery to varying levels of student knowledge, from those with little to no chemistry background to students with advanced subject matter understanding, while creating a comfortable and encouraging learning environment
Operate analytical instrumentation, primarily gas/liquid chromatographs and mass spectrometers, in support of laboratory testing and monitoring activities
Perform set-up, operation, sampling, calibration, quality control, data collection, and troubleshooting for test monitoring in chemical agent or simulant environments
Diagnose sources of instrument problems and perform routine repairs; correct instrumentation issues identified through QC procedures or data analysis
Implement analytical methodology as directed by more experienced staff
Work with or around highly toxic materials in accordance with established safety protocols
Maintain disciplined record keeping and adhere to established QA/QC procedures
Respond to urgent project requests and shifting priorities, including working rotating shifts (nominally 8–12 hours), weekends, and holidays as required
