The Energy and Environment Cabinet, Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Environmental Program Support, Inorganic Branch, Standard Testing Section is a chemical laboratory setting that will provide you with the opportunity to practice your skills and be a part of monitoring and testing team for most of the waters of the Commonwealth. The recreational lakes, rivers, streams and creeks all over the Commonwealth eventually get testing by the DEPS laboratory for nutrients, metals, volatile compounds, pesticides and harmful algal blooms. If you are interested in being part of a first responder team for environmental emergency spills, created both by accident and due to citizen negligence; running samples that can help identify both known and unknown contaminants, to enforce environmental laws, protecting both human and wildlife habitats and bring responsible parties to justice, then this is the job for you.

This Chemist I position is an entry level position that will focus primarily on the preparation and analysis of inorganic compounds in water and soil samples. You will be working in a state of the art laboratory in the Centralized Laboratory Facility located at 100 Sower Blvd. in Frankfort, KY. This position is eligible for promotion, and will be granted upon completion of service time and annual performance goals.

By joining the DEPS, Inorganic Branch, Standard Testing Section as a Chemist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to work in helping DEPS meet programmatic, monitoring, and regulatory testing needs.

Requirements

• Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or in a natural, physical, forensic science or a related science field.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine preparation and analysis of various types of water, waste, soil, and tissue samples using several different types of instrumentation.
• Once trained, the chemist will serve as the primary analyst for several analytical methods.
• Converts raw data to final results using data reduction programs and reviews raw data for errors.
• Performs routine maintenance on instruments.
