About The Position

The Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking a Chemical Safety Specialist. The Chemical Safety Specialist will improve the overall health and safety within the research laboratory by conducting program reviews, audits, inspections, and improve hazardous materials management through chemical assessments, and implementing the University’s web-based chemical inventory system. They will be implementing safety programs due to non-compliance, and implementing best safety practices. They will be correcting identified deficiencies through ongoing program reviews and audits/inspections. This position reports to the Chemical Hygiene Officer.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering including proficiency with chemical nomenclature or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical experience (typically 1-3 years) working with chemicals.
  • Working level proficiency of safe practices for hazardous chemical handling, storage, and control of such hazards.
  • Proficiency with tools, techniques, and processes for gathering and reporting data in a department or division.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs and mobile devices for data recording and retrieval.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively contributing to collaborative, welcoming and respectful work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an academic or laboratory environment handling chemicals
  • Familiarity with chemical experimentation and related equipment.
  • Practical experience (typically 1-3 years) with occupational or environmental health and safety issues, e.g., conducting assessments and/or implementing safety programs.
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures and regulations.
