About The Position

XL Batteries, a Massachusetts-based development stage company focused on long duration energy storage at the grid level, is growing its highly collaborative team with the addition of a Chemical Process Engineer. Our mission is to create a safe, low-cost and reliable grid-scale battery that will enable the transition of the grid from fossil fuels to renewable sources. We are a fast paced, nimble startup where no job is too big or small, and where we strive to ask ourselves the hard questions before problems arise.

Requirements

  • Strong foundation in Chemical Process Engineering and Process Engineering, with experience in industrial or pilot-scale environments.
  • Background in the Chemical Industry or closely related fields, ideally involving electrochemical systems, batteries, or energy storage
  • Demonstrated success scaling processes from lab/pilot to commercial scale.
  • Strong command of PFDs, P&IDs, mass/energy balances, control strategies, HAZOP, and regulatory documentation.
  • Track record delivering plants or major process units safely, on schedule, and on budget.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication, documentation, and project leadership
  • Skills in Process Design, including flowsheet development, equipment specification, and scale-up from lab to production
  • Hands-on lab or plant experience, including experimental design, process scale-up & optimization, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of safety, environmental, and regulatory standards relevant to chemical processing.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency in process simulation and data analysis tools (e.g., Aspen, MATLAB, Python, or similar software) and experience using AI tools to accelerate technical documentation
  • Ability to work on-site in Marlborough, MA, collaborate in cross-functional teams, 'go-to-market' partners
  • Experience managing and communicating effectively with 'go-to-market' partners, engineering firms and ability to communicate complex technical & engineering concepts clearly.
  • Experience in startup or fast-paced environments and an interest in sustainable energy technologies is a plus.
