About The Position

Hy-Vee is seeking a Checker with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to helping customers and teammates. Checkers operate the register, assist customers throughout the store, and help ensure customers have a positive experience. Training is provided, and there are no education or experience requirements. This is a fast-paced retail store role that involves standing and walking throughout the shift. The position requires customer interaction, accurate register operation, maintaining the register and merchandise areas, and supporting other store activities as needed. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Ability to follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team to deliver a positive customer experience.
No education or experience requirements; training is provided.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service, greet customers, learn their names, and help make each visit positive.
Operate the cash register accurately and process payments, including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay knowledgeable about item lookup and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and take customers to items when requested.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate clearly using the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Stay aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other areas of the store and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
