About The Position

The Checker works in Hy-Vee’s Grocery department and provides customer service at the register and throughout the store. Checkers greet customers, process purchases and payments accurately, assist with merchandise and carry-out services, and help customers locate products. They also help maintain the register and store areas, support promotions, follow applicable laws and store policies, and assist in other areas as needed. Training is provided; no education or prior experience is required.

Requirements

• Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and complete tasks involving a few concrete variables.
• Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
• Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
• Communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
• Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a good customer experience.
• No education or experience requirements; training is provided.
• Complete a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service and greet customers.
• Operate the cash register and process payments, coupons, benefits, and lottery transactions accurately.
• Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
• Follow applicable local, state, and federal requirements for WIC, food stamps, tobacco, liquor, and lottery sales.
• Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out services.
• Stay informed about item and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
• Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers find items.
• Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, report improper cash levels, and verify register balances where applicable.
• Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel.
• Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
• Assist management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
• Assist in other store areas and complete special projects as assigned.
• Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
• Report to work as scheduled and on time.
