About The Position

The Checker operates the register, assists customers throughout the store, and helps ensure each customer visit ends positively. This is a fast-paced retail role centered on friendly service, accurate transactions, teamwork, and maintaining a safe, clean store environment. Training is provided; no education or experience is required.

Requirements

• Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables.
• Perform arithmetic involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
• Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions, and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
• Work effectively as part of a team to provide a strong customer experience.
• Frequently stand and walk throughout the shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning or sanitation duties.
• Complete a pre-employment drug screen successfully.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service.
• Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
• Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
• Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
• Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
• Stay informed about item lookup and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
• Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to items when requested.
• Keep the register area clean and supplied, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
• Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
• Use the intercom or telephone clearly, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
• Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
• Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events.
• Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
• Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
• Report to work as scheduled and on time.
