About The Position

The Charge Nurse in Surgical Services is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the Surgery unit. This role provides leadership and clinical oversight for Surgical Services staff and daily operations. The Charge Nurse works closely with the Preop/PACU to ensure patient flow efficiencies and delivers and oversees safe, evidence-based perioperative patient care in accordance with AORN standards and hospital policies. The department consists of 10 OR’s and provides care 24 hours a day, with on-call personnel from 2:30 PM to 7:00 AM, and weekends for patients of all ages who require emergency and elective surgical procedures. This role also supports staff orientation, education, competency development, performance feedback, and policy/procedure updates. Additionally, the Charge Nurse monitors quality, safety, documentation, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement activities, serving as a liaison and clinical resource for nursing staff, physicians, ancillary departments, and Pre-op/PACU teams.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Current Kentucky RN licensure.
  • Minimum 1 year of job-related experience.
  • BLS within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS within 90 days of hire.
  • PALS within 90 days of hire.
  • Glucometer Training upon hire.
  • Aegis Training per identified needs.
  • Nurse Wound Care within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • CNOR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the daily activities of the Surgery unit.
  • Providing leadership and clinical oversight for Surgical Services staff and daily operations.
  • Coordinating patient flow, staffing assignments, room turnovers, scheduling, supplies, and surgical readiness.
  • Delivering and overseeing safe, evidence-based perioperative patient care in accordance with AORN standards and hospital policies.
  • Supporting staff orientation, education, competency development, performance feedback, and policy/procedure updates.
  • Monitoring quality, safety, documentation, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement activities.
  • Serving as a liaison and clinical resource for nursing staff, physicians, ancillary departments, and Pre-op/PACU teams.
  • Implementing the nursing process for each patient assigned to his/her care.
