About The Position

This position evaluates existing buildings and design solutions for the complex and unique problems of our clients. Projects include a mix of residential, multi-family, and commercial projects, with an emphasis on building rehabilitation, as well as adaptive reuse of older buildings, and enhancements to existing facilities to accommodate changes in use and implementation of equipment and machinery. The project engineer is responsible for the evaluation and restoration/renovation of existing building structures in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors and building envelope systems. The successful candidate is comfortable communicating with clients, contractors and working on active construction sites. A commitment to providing practical and creative solutions are essential. He/she is a dedicated and curious worker who takes responsibility easily and quickly. To be successful in this role, this person must possess a team spirit while having the ability to work independently with a minimum of direction.

Requirements

  • Completion of a degree in an engineering program with a focus on Building Science, Architectural, or Civil / Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, with a focus on projects related to building sciences and building rehabilitation.
  • Must be a professional engineer licensed in the Order of Engineers of Quebec
  • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills in French and English
  • Knowledge in areas related to building science
  • Understanding of building construction including methods, materials and systems is required.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, specifically in accuracy of calculations and completeness of data collection and notation.
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Self-motivating, multi-tasking and quick learning ability with a keen eye for detail.
  • Team player with ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Commitment to customer service and technical excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Building Science personnel and responsibility for group production and ensuring timelines and billing needs are met.
  • Supervision and training of 2 to 3 juniors in engineering / candidate for the profession of engineer.
  • Oversee field review/testing and data collection, design, report and specification preparation and contract administration
  • Collect field data and prepare Reserve Fund Studies and Capital Expenditure Plan Reports.
  • Perform leak investigations of all aspects of building envelope, roofs, walls, windows and foundations.
  • Performing condition assessments of multi-residential, commercial and institutional facilities.
  • Collect field data required for the preparation of repair specifications, drawings and tendering.
  • Provide project management and related contract administration.
  • Liaison with customers, contractors and manufacturers
  • Provide technical support, guidance and review of completed work prior to delivery to the client; coordinate with other Rimkus engineers for peer reviews and design guidance.
  • Promote team building, quality, public relations, enthusiasm, ethics, initiative and reliability from employees.
  • Provide periodic input to the sales and marketing plan of the department; work with Business Development Managers to identify and implement and effective plan.
  • Identify and regularly consult with various clients/organizations of up-coming projects where a relationship has been established.
  • Prepare, review (with department head/project manager) and present department specific proposals; follow up on prepared proposals, update proposal log and identify reasons for success/failure.
  • Make contributions to the company knowledge base and procedural practices.
  • Prepare proposals, reports and quotations where required to generate sales.
  • Preparation of specifications and design as required on an as needed basis; review shop drawings.
  • Manage projects and assist clients at all phases: from conception to final realization;
  • Oversee project administration and assist with management of engineering projects of Rimkus; provide construction contract administration.
  • Perform field investigation work and the diagnosis of building problems required to design exterior envelope remediation including exterior wall, fenestration, roof and/or structural remediation.
  • Assist in conducting leak investigations of all aspects of the building envelope, roofs, walls, windows and foundations.
  • Measure building dimensions and quantify on-site and from drawings.
  • Interpretation and hand-drawing of in-situ construction details.
  • Other task may be required to ensure timely completion of deadlines.
  • Carry out on-site surveys and complete evaluations of existing building structures and building envelope systems;
  • Develop the building envelope rehabilitation and structural rehabilitation programs and recommend the project concept to the client;
  • Contribute to the company's knowledge base and procedural practices.
  • Coordination with other engineering and architectural disciplines;
  • Administration of contracts/construction examinations during the implementation of building rehabilitation and restoration works;
  • Market and solicit work from new and existing clients, oversee field review/testing and data collection, design, report and specification preparation and contract administration
  • Carry out on-site quality control and compliance with the prepared specifications.
